Orissa hopes to generate 9820 Mw by 2014

The Orissa government hopes to generate about 9820 Mw power in the state by 2014.This includes 2400 Mw to be generated by Sterlite Energy Ltd, 1050 Mw by GMR Kamalanga Energy Ltd, 1050 Mw by Nava Bharat Energy and 600 Mw to be generated by KVK Nilachal Power. - GMR achieves financial closure of 1,050 Mw thermal plant - Orissa HC stays construction of KVK Nilachal project - High Court stays construction of KVK Nilachal project - Rs 5,961 cr JITPL power project in uncertainty Besides, Jindal India Thermal Power Ltd (JITPL) is expected to generate 1200 Mw, Monnet Power Company Ltd (1000 Mw), Lanco Babandh Power ( 1320 Mw), Ind Barath Energy (Utkal) 700 Mw and Arati Steels (500 Mw), said energy minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak. The minister said, the 3rd and 4th unit of the Orissa Power Generation Corporation (OPGC) at its Ib Valley complex is expected to be commissioned by 2014. Similarly, the Ind Barath Energy project is targeted to go on stream by 2012. The Ind Barath Energy (Utkal) Ltd. has evinced interest to use the Merry-Go-Round (MGR) of OPGC and a decision in this matter will be taken after detail discussion and evaluation of the project. According to the figures available with Gridco, the average demand for power in the state is about 2432 Mw. The per unit cost of power generation from Orissa Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC) is 52.78 paisa per unit. While per unit generation cost of Indravati Hydro-Electric Project (HEP) is 73.35 paisa, it is 13.9 paisa in Machhkund. Similarly, the cost of generation of power for Orissa Power Generation Corporation (OPGC) is 193.7 paisa and the same is 152.8 paisa for Talcher Thermal Power Station (TTPS). While the generation cost is 300 paisa for Captive Generating Plants (CGPs), it is 269.43 paisa for renewable sources. Nayak said, the generation cost in the Central sector (thermal) is 197.31 paisa per unit and in case of hydro-electricity it is 190.39 paisa.
